Day 1: Cape Town to Ceres Area, Western Cape, South AfricaOn day one of your overland tour in Africa, you leave Cape Town and travel north through the wine growing regions of the Western Cape. Cross the Piketberg Pass into the fruit growing area of Citrusdal. You will spend the night in either Citrusdal or Clanwilliam, both towns presided by the majestic Cedarberg Mountains. Lunch and dinner is included. |
Day 2: Ceres Area to Gariep River, South AfricaToday you leave Ceres, travelling north through the Namaqualand. This region is well known for the myriad of colourful wild flowers that appear each spring. After stopping for supplies in Springbok, the Africa backpacking tour continues to the Gariep River, a natural land border between South Africa and Namibia. Here you will spend the night at a lovely campsite on the South African side of the river. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. |
Day 3: Gariep River to Fish River Canyon, NamibiaThis morning you have the option of partaking in a half day canoe trip on the stunning Gariep River. This trip affords the opportunity to enjoy some tranquil bird watching while paddling along. After lunch, the tour crosses into Namibia. After a short drive you arrive at Hobos campsite and the Fish River Canyon, the second largest canyon in the world. You will spend the day exploring the area before retiring for the night at Hobos campsite. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. |
Day 4: Fish River Canyon to Helmringhausen Area, NamibiaYou spend a leisurely morning of your Africa backpacking tour at Fish River Canyon, then head north into the southern farming area of Namibia. You stop for supplies in the small missionary town of Bethanie, before heading for your camp for the evening. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. |
Day 5: Helmringhausen Area to Sesriem, NamibiaToday you head north to the Namib-Naukluft Park, one of Namibia's top tourist destinations. Not far away is Sossusvlei, a magnificent area of desert and dunes, reputed to be the highest in the world. Your afternoon is spent exploring the area and there is an optional walk with highly skilled local guides.
Your guide will teach you about the fascinating history, geology, flora and fauna of the area, as well as the cultural legacy of the Bushman. You enjoy a spectacular sunset on top of Dune 45 before turning in for the night. Breakfast, lunch and dinner are included. |
