Day 1: JohannesburgPlease bring with you to the pre-departure meeting: your passport with relevant visa’s and evidence of medical and personal insurance. Please also bring the Local Payment. This must be paid to the tour leader prior to departure and must be paid in South African Rands Cash. |
Day 2: – Graskop - 390km
Departure will be early this morning to make your way to the beautiful undulating landscape of the Mpumalanga province. Your first stop on this African backpacking tour will be the historical town of Pilgrims Rest where you’ll have some time to explore the town. In the afternoon you’ll visit one of the well-known waterfalls in the area, the Mac Mac falls. You will return to Graskop Hotel where you overnight. Breakfast and Dinner.

Day 3: Kruger National Park – 250km
This morning you’ll take a leisurely drive to the awe-inspiring viewpoints of Blyde River Canyon and God’s Window. Then you’ll head to the famous Kruger National Park for an afternoon game drive.
Here you have the opportunity to experience close encounters with game such as Elephant, Lion, Rhino and Buffalo in their natural, unfenced environment. An optional night drive is available at some of the camps. You will overnight in in chalets, (Berg-en-Dal, Crocodile Bridge, Pretoriuskop, Lower Sabie etc). Breakfast and lunch. |
Day 4: Kruger National ParkThe best time to see the game is early morning and late afternoon. So you’ll have an early start for the first game drive, setting out to spot some of the Big Five, then return in the heat of the day and relax at the rest camp, to go out on a second game drive in the afternoon.
You’ll enjoy dinner at the camp’s restaurant. Dinner to your own expense! Tonight you will overnight in one of the southern rest camps (chalet accommodation). Brunch. |
Day 5: Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary – Swaziland 300kmSet out early this morning for some more game viewing in Kruger National Park. Then you’ll make your way south to the little Kingdom of Swaziland. You head to Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary, which was the first of Swaziland’s wildlife refuges.
You will have the afternoon to enjoy some optional activities in this beautiful reserve such as horse-riding, mountain bike riding and game walking. Overnight in Mlilwane Wildlife Sanctuary. Breakfast. |
Day 6: St Lucia - 370km
This morning on the African backpacking tour you will make your way to St Lucia, a world heritage site. You have the option of going on a sundowner cruise on lake St Lucia or simply relaxing on the beautiful beach. Overnight at Shonalanga or similar. Breakfast and Lunch. |
Day 7: St LuciaYou’ll head out early this morning for a game drive in Hluhluwe/ Umfolozi National Park, home to the largest population of Black and White Rhino in the world. Enjoy some close up encounters with game in this well known reserve.
Then you’ll return to St Lucia where you have more time to do optional activities such snorkelling at Cape Vidal beach, an open vehicle game drive in Cape Vidal reserve or a visit to the cultural village. Overnight at Shonalanga or similar. Packed Breakfast. |
Day 8: Umhlanga RocksAfter breakfast you will travel to Umhlanga Rocks. You are free to enjoy the day on the nearby beach or explore Durban and the surrounding area. Overnight Umhlanga City Lodge or similar. Packed Breakfast. |
Day 9: Umhlanga
After breakfast this African backpacking tour ends. |
